Our Story: A Little History About Rockford Springs Community Church
Recognizing that many people would continue to make new homes in North Kent County, the visionary leaders and members of Spencer Mills Church (Gowen, Michigan) made plans to plant a daughter church in 1995.
In 1994, Bob West was called to be the “church-planter” for the new work. Bob, his wife, Peggy, and their children arrived on the field in August 1994. Bob began teaching the core group at Spencer Mills Church. The first worship service of Rockford Springs Community Church was held on Palm Sunday, 1995 at Sheridan Middle School in Rockford. Toward the end of 1995, the congregation changed the location of its meeting place to Jordan Chapel in Cedar Springs.
Bob West resigned in January 1996. The congregation called Louis Wislocki in April. He arrived to assume the work of the ministry with his wife, Josephine, and three of their children, Louis, Micah and Leah, on July 4.
On August 24, 1997, Rockford Springs Community Church organized as a separate congregation of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church.
In 1997 the church purchased 10 acres on M-57. RSCC is grateful to the congregation of Spencer Mills Church for contributing $20,000 in matching funds for the purchase. The total cost was $37,000. Construction began on Phase I (entrance building) in August and was completed in February 1998. One hundred and twenty-eight attended the first service on March 1. Among them were thirteen first-time visitors. This worship service was one of the most exciting events in the life of the new church.
The increased attendance demanded the construction of Phase II, especially if the congregation desired to continue growing. Construction on Phase II (the main auditorium/activity center and classrooms) began in March 1999 and was completed on October 2, the same year. The first worship service in the new auditorium was attended by over two hundred.
Donald Osborn (the seller of our original parcel) gifted a two-acre parcel to the church in December 2001 increasing the church’s parcel to twelve acres.
The need for classroom space moved the congregation to begin construction on Phase III (Christian education wing). The project commenced in the summer of 2004 and was completed one year later, in time for the beginning of Sunday School and Family Night. It includes four large classrooms, a cadet workshop, a youth room, and a spacious north entrance.
Louis Wislocki resigned in December of 2008. David Vander Meer was called by the congregation and arrived to assume the work of the ministry with his wife Carol on October 18, 2009. Our current Pastor is Kyle Sanford, who arrived with his family in August of 2022.
The congregation is thankful to God for providing the funds and labor through believers in and outside of Rockford Springs Church. The Lord has continued to add to the church many gifted believers who now are part of the ministry of Rockford Springs Community Church.
The congregation looks forward to serving Christ in the community in many new ways and anticipates construction of a new worship auditorium in the Lord’s good time.
