The path of life Sept. 24, 07
David began Psalm 16 as a prayer: “Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge.” One who believe in and loves the Lord feels “safe” in his with him, “safe” in him as refuge. Being in him as a refuge is knowing and feeling he is all around you. When we sin, we step outside that wall of protection because we are turning away from him. We are pursuing other gods, commiting idolatry. He is grieved by that because he love us but he will also let us find out how foolish it is turn away from him. So, as David continues, he praises the godly. The idolaters, on the other hand, will suffer more and more. Then he tesified that he will praise the LORD, who “counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. I keep my eyes always on the Lord.”
If you look to the Lord in faith, he counsels you. His Word is alive in you and through his Word and through that still small voice that proceeds from the Word and streams into your consciounsness, he instructs you. David praised the LORD with these words: “You will make me know the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.” That describes the kind of Christian life the LORD wants us to have. It is rich. It is bountiful and overflowing. It is good. Oh yes, you and I are so completely dependent on him. I think I understand more and more how the Lord wants us to worship him throughout the day in everything we do. No, you can’t force that. You can’t worry about it. Ask him to help think on him throughout the day and you will find yourself worshiping him in all you do. Here is how it will work: 1) You will sense his presence, 2) that will give you joy, 3) you will feel content and thankful, 4) if you are facing trial, or sorrow, or depression, you will ask him to surround you and protect you until the trial passed. God bless.
